OMG RACHEL o_O
I play bassoon too... but in marching band I play a marching baritone! It is the heaviest instrument that is held like a trumpet... out tubas are heavier, but they use their shoulders. Anyways, I`m a athlete, why do people stereotype weak people to be in band and strong people to be athletes? People that do that are stupid and deserve to get a swirly! LOL
Anyways, in our school we have bassoon brothers too! WTF?

This is my 4th year playing bassoon. I`m a freshman in high school now. To answer your question, no. Bassoons are not heavy, once you get used to them. I carry mine with one hand, but the size is what is difficult, not the actual weight.

I play bassoon, and I thought it`d be heavy but I took it up anyway. My teacher told me about slings you can get that support your back and help you to hold it - it`s so much easier now! Trust me, it`s not actually that heavy. It makes you more strong as well good luck with the bassoon!

No it is not really heavy. I started in the 7th grade too and I was the same weight as you. It is something you get used to. The bassoon is heavy in the case but that is also something you get used to.

Don`t worry you`re perfectly capable. There are butt straps that you sit on (obviously) that take a lot of the weight you`ve also got a hand rest. Your arm does get tired sometimes, but a little rest and its just as good as new.

I am 6 foot and 240 lbs. I have never had a problem with the bassoon(I am kidding, but I really don`t). Small hands? Weight? Who cares? Play the bassoon; the bassoon is the coolest thing since snow! I play tenor sax and bari, they kill your back. The bassoon is nothing.
O, I have alot of respect for all you baritone marching fools out there. PLay on!

It`s heavier than most other instruments. but you use a neck or belt strap to make it easier. It can be hard work carrying the massive case around though. you`ll find a way to manage, it could even make you stronger.

Comparing to other instruments, the case is pretty small actually. I was surprised on how thin it was, and it was just a big longer than a brief case, and a alto or tenor sax is more harder to carry probably. Bass clarinets are pretty annoying to carry, the length, and 1 side is heavier than the other cause of the bell or something and it`s wierd. My oboe now, is pretty small and before I was clarinet and then flute and piccolo, so I`m not used to carrying big cases...

It`s not the size you should worry about, it`s the weight. Bassoons in their cases are not very large, but they can be heavy, especially if you have a NICE case made of plywood to protect the Bassoon more. The REALLY heavy ones are the Polypropelene (Black Plastic) Bassoons, beleive me, I Know from having one.
