I`ve always wanted to try bassoon ... I think that you should at least try it and then see which you like better..

god i hate oboe. sorry it just sounds like crap to me. I would take the bassoon over the oboe anyday. but im guessin you best bet is to try it and compare the two. decide which you like better.

Play the bassoon! I`m planning on playing oboe professionally, but I picked up the bassoon two months ago, since I thought knowing both of the double reeds would be beneficial. The bassoon`s really easy to pick up after playing the oboe, except reading the bass clef. But you get used to it and then it`s really fun! Playing bassoon will be a really good experience.

You can also try to compromise with your director, like asking to play oboe on some songs and bassoon on others. That`s what my director lets me do.

the person who compared oboe to bassoon saying that oboe sounds terrible (jay), you must have only heard bad oboe players. I happen to play bassoon though.

I have no connections with double reed right now but I know 2 people that played the oboe and they weren`t the best, they sounded like dying geese, yes exactly like dying geese. BUT when I went to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for a field trip, the oboe sounded just beautiful, so it really depends if you`re good or not.
