I might as well state this question to jay, since only couple other people talk, but anyways, How much solo`s do you reckon bassoons get in band? I don`t know if the high school band is symphonic, but does bassoons get solo`s? If so, around how much of songs get solo`s out of 10? Just a brief estimate would do (P.S. The answers won`t convince me not to play the bassoon )

unfortunately bassoon`s rarely get a solo. so far as a group i`ve only ever played one song that is mostly bassoon but coincidentally i played it in two different groups. that song was Stravinsky`s Fire Bird Suite. You kinda gotta make your own solo`s by going out for solo ensemble and concerto performances. i actually have a concerto night tomorrow where im playing weber`s Bassoon Concerto in F major, Op.75 part #2. pretty nerve racking so wish me good luck

hmm. in band? barely any. infact, you`ll see that your usually playing trombone music. =/ so far i`ve only had one sheet of music that was different from the trombones. and it was o canada. and i play against the melody, and i`m happy because as far as i know i`m the only one who plays that part because my band has no tuba, but yet, no one can hear me, which is frustrating b/c the percs and the brass are so fakking loud. =/ all the brass instruments shut up for the flute part (from far and wide, o canada, blah blah blah blah blah blah) but when it comes to (god keep our land, blah blah free haha) no one can hear the counter-melody. GRR...

the only time i get a `solo` is when we get started on each piece, because i sight read much better than the trombones.. so when it`s a trombone solo, you only hear me. (might you, this aint no solo, it`s like 5 notes.. haha)

btw, we`re playing bohemian rhapsody next (our teacher likes pop music b/c it makes people more interested in band and it doesn`t sound too american, and everyone where i live likes Queen) you have no idea ho much i hate that song... ARGH! i was saying to my band teacher: sir, you have no idea how much i hate this song. and he tells me: it doesn`t matter, you`re still gonna learn it. =/ haha.

Well im a Senior in high school at a class D school, and only every once in a while do I ever get solos, alot of soli`s however. But I also play in a University Wind Symphony, and there are lots of solos there, almost every other song has something to do with either the bassoon having a key part in it, but dont ever count on the bassoon being a key for marches either. GAKK! SOUSAS THE DEVIL!!, The only march I have played that has had a cool bassoon part was march of the belgian paratroopers, and thats only for like 5 measures. Otherwise, play out during the trio`s because thats the only prominent part youll get, this goes for oboes as well!
