So I just got my first trumpet. Its nice! Got it for £60 off Ebay which sounds a good deal! Its in great condition and came with a hardcase and has been looked after. My girlfriend plays and she was telling me how to actually make a sound (she's giving me my first lesson on Saturday) so I finally got a sound out of it today which sounded okish but when I press the valves it doesn't change the pitch at all. She said to check the air is flowing through them all by pressing one and playing for each valve and they all worked but the same pitch..

Is my trumpet broken or am I just not doing it right?

Thanks

Jamie

Do you know what make the trumpet is? Sometimes you might get a good trumpet off eBay but usually, ehhh... If the sound doesnt change when you press the valves, it's probably the trumpet. Also, you just started? If thats the case, I would play with the horn for about a week or so and if it doesn't change than most likely it's the trumpet.

Take out the valves, and give them to your girlfriend. Have her give them a once over and get her opinion. If that doesn't work, I wouldn't know how to solve your problem because i can't see your horn, but you should take it to a local instrument repair shop. Have them look over it to see if you got a bargain, or if you did, as you might fear, of gotten ripped. Good luck!

This is something I did once, make sure the little numbers on the valves are facing the mouthpiece. If their not, then the trumpet won't make noise.

get your girlfriend to play the trumpet. If she can play it with no problem, its you. If she has a problem playing it, then the problem is the trumpet.
