I saw my teacher do it and I tried and I could also. Is it usual to be able to play without using your mouthpiece?

If you can play without a mouthpiece it actually shows that you are using the right technique to play the trumpet with the mouthpiece. Because, without a mouthpiece you cant push on your chops meaning you have to use a correct technique to play.

Playing without a mouthpiece is good fun!

I never was able to play on the trumpet without a mouth piece, but once i was being an idiot and took my headjoint off of my piccolo and it made some sort of noise...

I figured out about a year ago that I could play without amouthpiece.
I would always do it occasionally, just to amuse myself.
