Phil Smith? I love his playing. He was the first pro I've ever seen live. I saw him play when the NY philharmonic did the mahler 5th. It was beyond amazing!

Best is a loaded word. It depends what you're looking for. Jazz? Classical? Virtuoso? All round? well i'll tell you. For jazz it's definetly gonna be Wynton Marsalis. For an all round player its gonna be wynton too. Virtuoso it's gonna be wynton. or Sergei Narkiakov. Sergei Blows my mind, he's amazing. I'm catchin up tho lol. And if you're talkin about a principal trumpet player....ide say Charlie rocks principal in the BSO. schlueter rocks. But he's retiring. Also....ALLEN VIZZUTTI WROTE THE CARNIVAL OF VENUS(NOT VENICE) AND IT'S LIKE...INSANE. so there you go. Wynton, Sergei, And Allen vizzuti for soloists. And charlie schlueter for orchestral work.

I would also have to say Wynton Marsalis as an overall player. Everyone knows that he is a phenominal jazz player but he can also perform classical concertos as good as anyone in the world. I have a cd of him playing numerous concertos with the London Philharmonic and he is amazing.

What about Arturo Sandoval? He can play many styles of music and has an incredible ability to imitate different players styles and sound. He also is very strong technically and has incredible range with very good clear tone in the extreme of his range.
