hey. im an intermediate trumpet player with a crappy 7C beginner mouthpiece. ive had it since i started and i loathe it. im going to get a new one but am kind of back and forth on what one to get. i'd like one to increase range more easily. i was also wondering what anyones verdict on plastic mouthpieces...the metal in mine makes my lips turn black:p if anyone can help me make a decision it would be greatly appreciated:D thanks guys

First of all the next stage for an intermediate player is usually a 3C, I say usually because it depends on the player. As for plastic mouthpieces the only use they have is to not expand or contract in hot or cold weather. By the way, you're mouthpiece might leave a mark because it is dirty and needs a cleaning and a good polish.

the best option is to go and try a few mouthpieces which ever 1 feels the most comfortable for u is the 1 to pick. keep in mind that u should pick a mouthpiece that feels comfortable. dont worry bout sound or range to a degree just look for 1 that feels good then practice on it and develop those areas. a lot of ppl think a diff mouthpiece is gonna give u a bigger range or bigger sound. thats crap. they will just help. eg i am always changing from classical music to marching band to big band all the time a lot of the time ill have to march then do the sit down gig which will have a big band chart then a classical chart 1 after the other. i can produce the same range and sound out of both my lead mouthpiece and my clasical mouthpiece. they just make it easier to play diff things. i can do this because the what u wanna do is in ur head b4 it comes out of ur horn.
