I have been playing trumpet for three almost four years and I have been 1st chair the whole time. For 8th grade graduation I got a YTR-6335S trumpet and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me that have to do with Marching Band, Studio Band, or just General High School band. (or High School)
I started on cornet then went to a sucky jupiter student trumpet and now I have my professional yamaha. Is there anything about this instrument that might surprise me when I start playing in the band?

I would advise you to march with an older horn because marching band will ruin your new trumpet...even if you make a HUGE effort to be careful with it.

i couldn't agree more with "hstrumpeteer". i am a former trumpet player of 2 1/2 years, and i can tell you from experience, that marching/field show season is brutal on not only trumpet, but any other instrument. definitely use a different instrument for outdoors(older, crummier, etc.).

I do have a really old Cornet that I could use. would it be alright to practice with the cornet but then march with my trumpet? What exactly does marching do to the trumpet that is so bad for it?

I march with my pro horn...just don't drop and you'll be fine. PRACTICE!!!! that's all i have to say is just practice. As of now i rank in the top 3 best highschool trumpet players in connecticut...and it's because i practice. You practice, and you'll do good.

my marching band makes us use all bach silver trumpets and the whole brass has silver horns. if you are going to march it would be better if you pratice with a horn that you will march with. and a tip find a lighter trumpet because that trumpet will feel 20 pounds heaver than the start of the show.

I don't think they gotta all be bachs. Do they? Get something your comftorable with. I do everything with my bach strad, and i think it has like a ding on the bell because some kid hit it with his case..and that's about it. So just use 1 trumpet and take care of it and you'll be all set junior.

Oh, marching does nothing bad to the horn first off. If you drop it, that's bad. you have a better chance of dropping it...but how the hell do you drop a trumpet? The sweat can ware off the silver...but it would take a very very very long time. So just march with ur trumpet. Screw the old cornet thing.

if you do parade marching.... definatly have a crappy trumpet on hand..
because chances are when you have breaks after the bus leaves your not going to hold the trumpet, your going to set it down, and no matter where you set it.. it will get kicked, something dropped on it.. etc..
better safe then sorry
