Hi all,
How much louder is actually a trumpet, in comparison to other wind instruments, for example the saxophone?
Does this have to do with the instrument's size, or with the fact that sound has to come out from the trumpet's bell all the way down the other end, instead of keyholes?
Perhaps the trumpet player's need for a considerable amount of puff in order to produce sufficient tone, has something to do with the trumpet's loudness as well. What do you think?

depends on the player. saxophone is easier to play loud with a good sound, because trumpets are sometimes easily overblown. if you're not worried about a good sound, and go for sheer volume (what's wrong with you?) then trumpets are the louder.

Yes, good sound is definitely the most important.
If, during practice, you preferably want to keep volume down for the neighbors, then mutes help trumpeters.
