So ok, my school's musical we're doing this year is West Side Story. Ummmm ouch. My band instructer is hiring a band for the pit, but there's 3 students he's having play in it, our oboe/clarinetist (she's in the regional band), our Tuba (he's a musical prodigy) and myself (bleh). I'm easily the least talented musician of the three, but I am pretty good. I just listened to all this music I'm supposed to play. By the way, I'm playing second trumpet. Ummmm I almost started crying. The rythms and stuff I can get easily but ummm ouch @ ridiculous range. How the eff am I ever going to prepare for this? I mean, like, I can play anything my teacher has ever handed me, but I've never needed to hit anything above a D, and even THAT'S new. I mean yes, as I'm getting better and better all this is becoming easier but I mean, omg, this stuff is insane

So my point is, how ever can I improve my range in like 3 months? I need like, a way to do it, and now, and to be able to last the whole concert

Lip Slurs and long tones. SOFTLY
Cat Anderson, arguab one of the best jazz trumpet players of all time, has a method book. http://www.r-o-d-d-y-t-r-u-m-p-e-t.cc/cat4and5.html
Try that and SOFT lip slurs and long tones.

So I do these two things here... for the amount of time it says... and this will increase my range?

hopefully.
Nothing is guaranteed. It might work for some, but not for others. The best thing you could possibly do is get a private teacher.

D as in above the staff? IF you have to play above that........ ouch.

But say, an octave below that? It should easily come if you practice enough.

Turns out the second part is not nearly as high as the first part. Good. Highest note I need to hit is a D. Easy.

However I've been using an Asymmetric Lead 342 for a while. I'm throwing it away and going back to a 3D. Anyone care to describe the correct way to play a 3D?

wow, thats your problem right there. you tihnk g mouthpiece will solve everything. If you can't hit it on a 3c, don't bother trying it with anything else.

Hmm, What notes do you need to reach? I find D above the staff the highest I can go at the moment. I have a jupiter 7C mouthpiece.

D's above the staff eh? well, there are definitely ways to learn the part. Long tones, and lip flexibility exorcises are definitely something you might consider practicing. Start on C and slur up to E then G then Bb then high C all open using no valves. Then go down chromatically to B and do the same thing. Practice the part in the lower octave also. By doing this you can hear the different intervals a lot easier, so when you bring it up to the upper register it will be easier for you to hear and adjust. Also when you're doing tone exorcises, listen to your dynamic. Try to be mf in the lower register, but be pp in the upper register to control your air. If you got any other questions gimme an email at Trumpetkid89@gmail.com. I'll be glad to help with anything else.

I showed up to my trumpet class my first day of college and everyone could play friken superC and higher, I know how you feel.I Agree with trumpetkid about the slurs, those are a definite exercise and do them exacly as he says or you can't improve as well. I know because I tried. Another exercise you can do to improve your range is chromatic scales. Start at a G above the staff and work your way up to a C. This reinforces the notes you already know, bulilds endurance and teaches you to blow air. Chickowitz exercises are also good, I believe you can find a book that has them. I've noticed through my experience though, that you have to work everyday to increase your range. Good luck to ya. Have a good show.

P.S. dont you hate it when your band director scares you like that.

Well ok. Good news. I just got rid of my old mouthpiece and picked back up my 3D. Aaaaaand it's surprisingly easier to play now. However I've only been practicing for about 15 minutes now, and I'm doing the things you guys are saying. Like, lip slurs in the upper range (which I can do rather easily). However, when doing a C E G Bb C slur, I find myself stopping the note between notes. Not tonguing them, just like, stopping for a second. I try to sustain it and it's not as easy. Should I always try to sustain it?
