Hey everybody, I just switched from oboe to trumpet about three weeks ago, and I can't seem to get above middle C . Is this normal? I know the trumpet I'm using isn't a very good one, so maybe that's part of the problem. What might I being doing wrong? I've read about correct embouchure, and I have a beginners' book, but I just can't seem to reach past C. Any suggestions? Thanks.

i agree...the best thing to do is get a private instructor...they usually can help a lot. Also, it just takes time. Trumpet can be a beast to learn, but its all worth it in the end. Just stick with it. You'll get there. Good Luck!

hey, i'm thinking about adding trumpet to my list of instruments and i know they say you're not supposed to play a woodwind and brass instrument i was just wondering if you could shed any light on the differences, and would you advise it? thanks

well, playing both a woodwind and a brass instrument has it's advantages and disadvantages. I play trumpet and sax, and there are some complications. You have to be careful not to play the woodwind much more than the brass instrument, because the brass instrument requires you to have a steady, routine practice schedule in order to keep your chops intact. The woodwind however, you can always pick up where you left off, there is almost no digression in skill if you don't practice regularly. So make sure to practice your brass instrument, because it can't be neglected, or you will pay the price (meaning you will significantly digress). This is the best advice I can give you. If I understand correctly, you are starting with woodwind and going to brass..? This will be much more difficult than going from Brass to Woodwind...so just be patient, and have fun.
Good luck

yeah, im working on grade 6 oboe now. So thinking of playing trumpet as a little bit of fun, (i dont plan on getting lessons having self taught myself 2 other instruments) isnt recommended? But then again playing without pressure is more fun so i would probably do a lot of practice... ahh so many questions. thanks for the help

Yeah, a private teacher really helps. I started band a year late, and got a private teacher. By the end of the year I was easily the best player in the band.
