Arturo Sandoval is who I think, of any trumpet player that isn`t dead (ie clifford brown) arturo has the best range and style

It really depends in my opinion on what type of music your basing this on. From what I`ve found the best players would have to be jazz musicians. The range always tends to be bigger, the music tuffer, and dont forget about improv!!!! It just blows me away everytime I hear a great Improv solo. Maynard Ferguson is great and would be on the top of my list if I had one. But there are so many greats its hard to say

i`ll have to disagree with dan about sandoval. He`s got a pretty high range but I believe that Manynard Ferguson or the tastee bros have a higher range. If you listen to clips of MF`s Canary and Arturo`s Canary Mf`s is ALOT more controlled.

i dont agree with the comment that jazz is harder because of the extreme range etc etc. Have you ever tied to play a pianissimo High D and land exactly on the beat with the conductor. try a few difficult symphonies and then tell if you think jazz is harder

Jazz and legit trumpet can be equally as difficult. Therefore, the best trumpet players nowadays are the guys who do good at both styles. Have you ever heard of Allen Vizzuti? This guy can fly!! He`s got total control of his trumpet in both jazz and classical. There`s a site that has sound files of him playing his version of Carnival of Venice where he leaps from extremely high to extremely low. check for it in google.

I personally think that you can`t judge a trumpet player on how good he or she plays.I play trumpet and people are always trying to judge my playing. There are several different styles as to which any trumpet player can play.Think about it!

Too many to count. Lead players, jazz players, classical players; bottom line is they are all equally great in different ways. They work at different things. I respect all of the great players in all genres.

The best trumpet player is the one who tries his best and is still had fun even when he didn;t do as well as he wanted.

HAHAHA
Did someone mention the tastee bro`s?! That`s great. I would say their range is high yes, but oh dear, where is the tone? They are really cool guys, but much of their playing is hurting on the tone range. It sounds like a strained trumpet at best. Scott and Donny are tight though, don`t get me wrong!

I almost forgot to comment on maynard ferguson, Sorry.

I don`t think you can classify Maynard as the greatest trumpet player. He was great in his hay day, but now he has lost much of his stamina. He can still wail out high notes (I saw him in concert two years ago) but he can`t play long at all, and his solo`s were just little high note splurges. As for actual trumpet control, go talk to Winton, he can control the trumpet in ways you can only dream of. Arturo Sandoval is also a sweet trumpet player, but I sometimes find myself classifying him with the other lead players, except that if anyone has ever heard the live recording of Night in Tunisia he did, the 14:00 one, then you can see that Arturo can solo too. Maynard may have been a better lead player, but Arturo blows him out of the water now.

I am of the believe that to be conidered a great trumpet player is all about sound, tone and control in both classical and jazz music. If I think about trumpeters like that the name of Wynton Maselis just pops to mind. Great technique with good flair when needed in both classical and jazz. PLaying different key trumpets as well a piccolo`s
