hi all,
i currently play on a 4B on cornet and a 5C on trumpet both plastic kelly mouthpieces, my teacher has asked me to get a metal one for my trumpet, iv been playing on these for about 6 months and quite like them, iv been playing for 7 years and am working towards grade 8 i also play alot of jazz.

any recommendations?

i think the best thing is to a shop and try them all out

Definitely "test drive" mouthpieces before you buy them. The Kelly's are great for outdoor playing, especially when the temperature drops. They warm up very quickly. I use an old Giardenelli metal mouthpiece that has interchangeable rims, one of which is plastic for just that purpose.

Try the 3 and 5 series of the Basch's. They're pretty easy to come by just about anywhere. If your local music shop has Schilke's, that's my first pick. The 17 is close to what you're playing now.

And, like you said - it's best to tru them first. Good luck!

thanks, the thing is i live in a area that has very little good music shops. i live in a small village on salisbury plain in wiltshire 15 miles north of salisbury. salisbuary has a 'music room' but its tiny and sells very little in the way of mouthpieces. does anyone know anyware which will let me go an try them out? my teacher has sugessted going to john packer in taunton but thats about an hour and a half away,

i think i will have to travel to get anyware but is there anywere closer?

I suggest you try and contact GR Technologies.
The owner is a trained Physist and trumpet player and he has spent millions in research and design. No one else does it like they do. They should be able to hook you up with a consultant and match you up with the correct settings. They only make Trumpet mouthpieces. I don't play trumpet, I play Horn but in dialogues with the president of GR Technologies and Ronny Romm (from Canadian Brass) they have helped me to design my own mouthpiece.

Give 'em a try.

Call this guy and see if he can suggest an option for you. Maybe his group will be in your neck of the woods soon, or maybe his sister lives near you and he can come visit her on the weekend. It can't hurt to try - worse thing is he may not be able to help you - - - but maybe he can.

just order a metal 5c on Woodwind Brasswind (www.wwbw.com) if you play on a 5c now, you won't need to try it out since it's the same thing, just made with metal.

From what all i see, it seems that a Bach 3c seems the best for you. You shouldnt go any bigger.

So go for a 3c or a 5c. I play a 3c and its great.

pfft i hate bach mouthpeices generally (i love my 1X though!) theyre to square around the rim. at the moment im generally playing on a bobby shew and am loving every bit of it, however it really just depends on what sound you are going for. If you like bachs then the 3c or 5c is probably the most versatile and the megatone is also a favorite of mine.
