Wow this is a broad topic. Maynard was awesome, no doubt about it. But as far as his jazz chops go, I wouldn't have him listed amongst the best by many means. If you're looking for someone else who is Maynard-esque, you might want to check out some of Wayne Bergeron's stuff, and some of Arturo Sandoval as well. They both have incredible high chops. But as far as jazz chops go, it's nearly impossible to identify any individual trumpet player as the best. I have always really enjoyed listening to Doc Severinsen....he plays with authority and so tastefully. So there's a few names, if that's what you were looking for.
Maynard had incredible jazz chops, just listen to him when he was younger, you could easily list him as one of the best. Jon Faddis is another person that you should listen to, also Bobby Shew, Al Vizzutti, and Vince DiMartino.
