So guys & gals what do you think? Are mutes useful inventions to stop trumpet players from being abused & yelled at, or are they mean and unfair to all of trumpet kind???
Personally, I don't like them and I never will. You sound so nasal when you play them. And, playing actual dyanmics is just about impossable with a piece of metal sticking out of your bell.

Alright, props to you. I guess in certain jazz situations a mute can sound pretty cool. I just dont like them for everyday use. Espically when practising non-jazz songs. My parents hate that I play trumpet because it's so loud and they HATE the noise.

Hey - grab a practice mute. It's not the same but it might help with household harmony -lol-

i think that it isnt mutes themselves that are bad, its how they're used. i mean, they can sound really cool in some jazz music, or even other kinds of music as well, but for just everyday use? no.

The only thing I really hate about mutes is when you have less than a measure to get the mute in or out, like in a huge rush and dont push it in all the way or something...its just a bother basically. I played a jazz solo with a plunger and it made it very unique.
