flugels are great for jazz solos (mostly slow songs) or for back up trumpet parts to give a more mellow tone. the flugel mouthpiece is smaller and the horn is bigger. i`ll save you the time of doing the math on that you need more air to play it. they are very fun though. cornets are more mellow then trumpets but not as mellow as flugels. other than that, they are pretty much te same as trumpets except most of them have keys to change from B-flat to A. i reccomond flugel if you want a different instrument than trumpet. i also say buy from Ebay and try to get a Getzen,Bach, Blessing maybe or yamaha. if there are German flugels, they are usually nice try spellying flugeljorn different ways and try typing it without typing horn. some Keywords: Flugelhorn Flugalhorn, flugel, flugal, flugel horn, flugal horn. Don`t get a MAXTONE. they suck

I am not sure what you meant by the flugel mouthpiece being bigger. The backbore and shank are smaller yes but the cup is much deeper!!!
Flugel`s rock!! Bach are very good Flugels (the strads) allround. My flugel is Courtois and it is my favourite i have ever tried. Intonation is fantastic and with the right combination if mouthpiece it has the most gorgeous tone (nothing down to me playing it )
If it`s for jazz you will be using the instrument, then deff go for flugelhorn. It will get you the greatest contrast from your trumpet.

What sucks about Maxtones? What`s bad about them...I`m looking to buy one, but why not a Maxtone? Do they have a bad tone or intonation?

Yea, go for flugle.(sp?) I started on coronet which is hardly different from trumpet. All the schools i`ve been to use coronets and tmpts interchangeably. I switched to mellophone with tmpt mouthpiece, and it wasn`t hard at all. It took me a day or so to get used to it and the new key.

Maxtones sometimes when you play certain valves you`ll hear a rattling noise. THey are very hard to tune to b flat. you usually have to play in A and transpose. they aren`t really much fun and the valves break i mean like in half or the valves sometimes are to big for the casing and they won`t come out

Cornets are almost same as trumpets, but the difference is the length of the brass valve. It is much shorter, which makes easier to play higher notes(Less resistance). On the other hand, Flugelhorn is much bigger, and have longer valves. It provides rich and dark tone, but is hard to play well.

lenght of trumpet cornet and flugelhorn in Bb are obviously the same, and
so the slides. The difference is in the conical and cilindrical proportion of
the tubing and its taper.
There are a lot of cheap chinese flugelhorns on ebay (often advertised as german engineering)
which should be avoided if you want a serious instrument. Cheap good instruments
are Jupiter, which are copies of the more expensive Yamaha. For a guide to
buy a flugelhorn see the following link
