I use Music Works Personal 2.5 and Noteworthy Composer, both of which are quite good. You can download a free trial version of NWC online. (I`m not sure of the URL for their site, just search on Google)
I`ve heard that Sibelius is also quite good.

I am currently doing a music A level, through which I have been introduced to Sibelius (the scoring program, not the composer). It is the best that I have used and I know several professional users as well. However it is not cheap and therefore it would be best to get a cracked copy. If you have broadband you could possibly download it.

yeah, finale`s the best - u can even hear what u just composed. u download wat they call a free trial, but its a permanent software. if u want even betta, u can pay $25 for another version, but the `trial` never expires or anything. its really awesome

You can hear what you just composed in Music Works, Noteworthy Composer and Sibelius as well.
