In India, Rakhi celebrations are about strengthening the bond of love between brothers and sisters and fostering brotherhood. This Rakhi is considered a very strong mutual trust between sisters and brothers. In history Rani Karnavati of Chittor who was a widow queen of Chittore realised that she could not defend against the invasion by the Sultan of Gujrat Bahasur Shah. So she sent a Rakhi to Emperor Humayun. The Emperor felt very touched about the sacred Rakhi. The Emperor immediately set off with his troops to defend Chittor. Humayun arrived too late, and Bahadur Shah managed to sack the Rani's fortress. Humayun evicted Bahadur Shah from fort and restored the kingdom to Karnavati's son, Vikramjit Singh. It is greatness of the Rakhi. About this event many historian did not agree. But what ever may be the case. If it was actual case then it has a high value of Rakhi in history. On the day of Raksha Bandhan sisters prepare the pooja thali, with diyas, roti, chawal and Rakhis. They worship the goddess tie Rakhis on the wrist of their brothers and wishes for their well beings. The festival is marked by the tying of a Rakhi, or holy thread, by the sister on the wrist of her brother. The brother in return offers a gift to his sister and vows to look after her as she presents sweets to him. The brother and sister traditionally feed one another sweets. Since north Indian kinship practices give cousins a status similar to siblings, girls and women often tie the Rakhi to their male cousins as well. Unrelated boys and men who are considered to be brothers (munh-bola bhai or adopted brothers) can be tied Rakhis, provided they commit to a lifelong obligation to provide protection to the woman or girl. Additionally, in cases when a sister is out of town, then another sister or cousin may tie a second Rakhi in her place. Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival celebrated mainly in the North of India. Rakshan Bandan falls on the full moon day of the Hindu month – Shravan. According to the English calendar it falls in the month of August. Raksha Bandan means “tie or knot of protection” in Sanskrit. It is a symbolic renewal of the relationship between a brother and a sister. The sister tries a Rakhi on her brother’s wrist to show her love for him, after which she prays for his well being and prosperity. In return the brother takes a wow to protect her throughout her life. The brother gifts her sister in return for the Rakhi which is a designer thread. According to Mahabharata, Draupadi the Pandava queen had tied a Rakhi to Lord Krishna. So Krishna considered Draupadi as her own sister. Raksha Bandhan signifies the virtues of love, affection and protection. Raksha Bhandhan is a festival in which a sister ties a silken tassel on the wrist of her brother and prays to God for his good health and happiness. The girls tied the Rakhis on their wrist and performed the aarti and after that sweets are given to the brothers. In return brothers give chocolates to their sisters and take pledge to take care of them throughout their life. Everybody in India celebrates Raksha Bandhan with great enthusiasm and enjoys the celebration very much. These days the gifting tradition has changed.
