i play a conn 88ht-cl. the mouthpiece is sweet, and the cl valve has been working like a dream for me. it definitely isnt the pea shooter i was used to, but in a good way. the tone is absoutely beautiful.

Alex,
I agree. I just got an 88h-cl recently and the sound is wonderful. Do you have the two different rotor caps for yours? Can you tell a difference from the lighter one to the heavier one?
Mine came with the Christian Lindberg gold 4cl mouthpiece. I don`t mind it but would like to try some others, any suggestions?

on the rotor cap, i can tell a difference, but only when im by myself. the tone is broader, to me, using the heavier one, but i dont hear it as much when im actually playing in an ensemble of any kind. right now im using the lighter one just because i like the design and it is lighter. thats immature, but hey. mouthpieces, i guess depends on what your playing. naturally, the bone is larger bore, so the smaller shank mouthpieces wont work. i use the cl most of the time, and a smaller 12c when im playing really high lead stuff. i guess one shouldnt switch mouthpieces like that constantly, but im still trying to find my favorite sizes. im actually curious to try a nylon mouth piece just to see what it is like, a friend of mine has one, though i dont think i would like it much. anyways, im kind of rambling. those are my thoughts, how bout you?

Alex,
I agree on the rotor cap. I can tell a difference when I`m practicing, but in a group, even if I`m the only trombone in a small group, I can`t really tell. I got a CD & book combo that lets me play along with the Canadian Brass (it has the trombone part left out) and it really sounds cool with the 88h in a large auditorium.
I found a chart that compares mouthpiece sizes and brands that I`ve found helpful.

Check it out.

thanks for that site, it is quite extensive. yeah, i think im going to look around and find a good mouthpiece that suits my purposes. i guess the real reason im so iffy is that i never really know what im going to play. im not stictly jazz, nor am i symphonic, etc etc. so its hard to get an appropriate mouthpiece for all of those, and build up a collection of specific ones as well. anyways, peace, thanks for that link.

What do you think of the Bach Stradivarius Model 36 Trombone?

I think that if you find a good Bach strad 36, you can be quite happy with it. A friend of mine has a decent one, and it is not bad, but every other bach trombone I have played sucks. If you are lucky, you can find a good one.

There are great trombones from other countries too. Yamaha, from Japan, Thein and Schmelzer from Germany, Besson from England. All of these are as good as or better than the Bachs, and there are many other respectable brands from other countries.

I`m surprised that the subject of "best horn" doesn`t bring out more partisans for old axes. Horns improve a little with age, I think. Also, the different brands were good at different times--pre-1970s Kings and Conns, New York and Mt. Vernon Bachs, 50s vintage Olds horns, etc. The quality control problems you see with new Bachs weren`t there in the old days, and there are a lot of the old axes still around.

I am a pretty good trombone player in high school thinking about getting a new trombone. Should I get a large or medium bore?

Thanks

i just started playing the trombone this year, i am in grade 9, and i`m not that bad anymore, my tone and oitcha re clear, and i have a fair range.
I am playing jazz with my trombone, and i have decided to buy a trombone, i was thinking of a getzen 351, but am not quite sure.
If you can give me any advice on what i hsould buy, i am thinking of a budget of 900 canadaian $s. so i know this is a low budget for a good trombone, but i think i could get a decent one fot this price (getzen 351?)
O and i plan to play jazz with this insterment for at least 3 years
