Glen Cronkhite makes great gig bags, though expensive.
If you want a bit of a harder shell, Marcus Bonna makes great ones as well, but they are also pricey.
check out www.hornguys.com and www.slidebone.com
both have great selections.

I have a wolfpac gig bag. I think those are the best. I got the one with collapsable legs. It comes in handy. A little pricey but definitely worth it. People have problems with Protec, but I also think they make pretty solid merchandise. Make sure you hold onto your hard case. Sometimes you might want to go back to it.

Theres a cheaply priced brand on eBay called "Guardian." Have you heard of this? Is it just the gig bag counterpart of cheap china-made horns?

Not familiar with that one... but ask yourself this...
Of all the places to cut corners, is protecting your horn really where you want to do it?
Gig bags are the repairman's best friend as it is. If you're going to use one, get the best protection possible.

I was looking for a case for my horn awhile back that was a cross between a hardshell and a gig bag. Protect makes a case (about $130 roughly) that has a plastic shell and nylon cloth around it. It offers simi-good protection-just as long as you don't drop it or anything along those lines. its the size of a normal case, has a outer storage compartment and you can attach backpack and shoulder straps to it.
Its really nice if that the way your looking on going...
