I love playing the regular tenor trombone, but what do you guys think of the alto trombone?

I love it. After so long hearing about bigger, broader, darker sounds, it's nice to play on something lighter, and brighter. In the hands of a great player, it's absolutely gorgeous. It's such a unique voice. I truly enjoy playing alto..( and tenor.... and bass...)

Thanks. You seem very knowledgable. How long have you been playing?

Just curious, but what would you do with an alto trombone if not ska, classical, or jazz? As far as brands go, I'm not completely sure...Obviously I don't know a whole lot about this because I'm the one that started the thread.

Well the point is that I play first seat in my jazz band and its quite hard hitting those extremely high notes like a high Bflat or high A...also in my SKA band i have a couple songs i need to take octaves lower because of the nature of the tenor trombone. Also, im trying to learn a different range and variety of trombones plus im 14 give me a break... also im buying this on my own i believe i can get about 2000$ as a budget limit if anyone has a few recomendations.

When looking for a new instrument, don't worry about range. Alto trombone will not give you what you need as a big band lead player. It is designed for a totally different purpose. Which is why virtually zero lead jazz players play on altos.

Get a small bore tenor for jazz, and a large bore for classical/orchestral/symphonic. Later on down the road, if you really think you need the alto for that specific color the few times it's actually called for, go for it.

Just remember: Your tone and sound quality, as well as the color you put out, is much more important than your range. Your range can get better as you work on the right stuff. You should never try to change up your equipment to increase or decrease your range. Cause in the long run, it's not the horn that plays the pitches, it's your lips and your head.
