You need to know them, though. Just about every song I've ever seen is based on one scale or another. If you know them all, then sightreading is a cinch!

What it is that you are finding so confusing? Is it getting the hang of playing the ones in less familiar keys? Or are you having trouble hearing the scales in your head? Let us know and maybe we can offer some advice?

Nah, its really just the music theory, which includes all the scales, like Major, minor, melodic, and stuff like that, but my private instructor is teaching musical theory now. I mean I've only been playing for more than a year, and I'm already in high school band so I think thats why its so difficult.
