Just wondering if any Australian (or maybe other nationalities) trombonists have heard of worked with an amazing trombonist by the name of Warwick Tyrrell. I recently had a week long workshop with him, and he was just so inspiring, and I'm curious to see whether he's had such an effect on other players.
Yeah – I know Warwick reasonably well although it's been a few years since we caught up. Great player, great guy. Apart from his "legit" musical skills, he's got some wacky cabaret routines happening – hope he dusted some off for you guys! I saw him bring the house down at a National Music Camp at Frensham (Mittagong, NSW) a while back.
He certainly came across as a very theatrical guy: in a jazz piece, for the bass's solo he was saying things like 'yeah baby!' and dancing.
During interval for the final concert, he hosted the warm-up-exercises-because-it's-so-frickin-cold, and got everyone jumping up and down like idiots, but it was massively fun
No, unfortunately. At the most recent encounters it was definitely "civvies" all round – just throwing cabaret and arranging ideas back and forth.
Tell you what, though – he had the whole 17th (18th?) Century aristocrat kit happening at Frensham, plumed headgear included. He was down on one knee, proposing (in song) to a hapless maiden sitting in the front row ... then he ripped out a couple of choruses of whatever it was on alto trombone. Might have been in reverse order. Anyhow, cracked the place up!
I'm assuming it's pre-dating the Adelaide Symph – I'll have to look up his concerti CD, currently elsewhere, which will have the relevant dates – anyhow, Sydney Con in the very early 80's. I think he might have been playing in Dick Montz's big band even though he was essentially involved in the "legit" side of things.
"Jerusalem" – I vaguely recall its use in some sort of TV comedy sketch – Monty Python? Someone will know ... is anybody else here?
Are you in the Sutherland band? Adelaide Symph?? The LPO???
No, I'm just a young instrumentalist that met him a mere week ago, at a camp in Rockhampton, but a week was enough to inspire me a great deal.
Wow, Wozza as a student... that is vaguely disturbing.
The string orchestra had to play Jerusalam while the brass, winds and choir sung along with the audience, so I don't know the words that well (I played cello). All I could remember is that the song actually was rather dark for the music that was played. I caught 'amongst these satanic mills' and the music was all bright and happy. lol
But yeah, do you have his email? I have his but if you want to catch up with him or whatever, I can give it to you (have to ask permission first though).
