For a jazz piece I am learning to play, my camp teacher wants me to use a plunger mute, does the bottom of a regular plunger (red part) work for it, and do I need to to anything once I take it off the stick if so?
<Added>
Or do I need to buy one at a store, just making sure?

Yup, just a regular old plunger. Preferably not used, of course.
You can go to the music store and spend $15-$20 on the same thing you can get at the harhware store for $2, but why?

Yeah, hardware store is the way to go. Most players seem to find it easier with a small hole drilled through the centre of the plunger – you can close the bell right up if you want to and still play. Also, check out pixie mutes – they're small straight mutes that fit almost entirely inside the bell. Sound great when used with a plunger!
Try to get some recordings, particularly of the Ellington guys – Bubber Miley, Cootie Williams, Rex Stewart, "Tricky Sam" Nanton (trombone) ...
One other thing – experiment with other plunger-like objects. A beer glass seems to be a favourite. Just make sure it's empty first.

Ummmm – I was looking at trumpetandfluteplayer rather than Trombone Forum. *brain explosion* Of course, go straight to "Tricky Sam" Nanton. Do not pass go (etc) ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOlpcJhNyDI (he's at 1:40. I'm assuming they're miming for the camera – just about to have a closer look now)
Might also be worth looking on the Red Hot Jazz site.
