LOOK... clearly... the OBOE is God's instrument.

Here is the story:

God created the Earth, and he wanted some beautiful music to go with it. So God made the oboe. The oboe made such a beautiful sound, but not everyone was smart enough to make the complex embouchure to produce a beautiful noise! So... god made flutes, clarinets, saxophones and bassoons! Ahh... what beautiful music they made! Yet, there were some who were to dumb to move their fingers fast enough to master the multitude of keys that came with these instruments. So God made trumpets, french horns, tubas and euphoniums, which only had 3 to 4 valves, so even those who were too dumb to play woodwinds could make beautiful music! But still... some idiots couldn't even master 3 to 4 valves. So god made the trombone, so the dumbest of all could make music with a slide. So, you see... trombone is NOT God's chosen instrument!

Yeah, I know this is just a silly, useless, slightly immature joke, but wanna know some actual real history?

The trombone was the first instrument allowed to play inside the church. It was considered the closest thing to the human voice, thusly the closest thing to God's word.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand done.

So if your saying that simple instruments are less worthy than others, isn't the human voice at the very lowest? Anyone can sing, and it doesn't require any valves or keys.

Yeah hun, I suggest you grow up.

I thought oboe was closest to the human voice.

Hey,
Read it closer. It's a joke.
And it's a joke posted BY a TROMBONE player.
Silly Rabbitt.

Now regarding the instrument most like the human voice. My feeling is Clarinet or Cello.
But there was a study done by a gentleman name Th. Hummell in Germany. And he would say it depands on which vowel and what pitch you are referring to. He did a very complicated study about orchestrating the orchestra to simulate the human voice. The orchestration for a whispered a is different than orchestration for a different vowel or consonant at a different volume.

But if I had to pick only one instrument I would say Clarinet.

I think I'd say cello for a male with a deeper voice, and clarinet for youth and women.

Gotta love the sound of the clarinet =D

Sorry oboes... xD

Well, historically it has always been the trombone. We can do the same nuances that vocalists can do, that really no other instrument can do.

It was the first instrument to be played in church because it resembled the human voice more than any other.

When asked about how he developed his incredible vocal style, Frank Sinatra (yup, old blue eyes himself) said he basically formed it by listening to Tommy Dorsey play trombone.

Remember, it's not about one pitch, or a sustained note, it's about which instrument can most closely mimic what a vocalist can do. Trombone, hands down, no debate, no argument.

D: that's no fun. I still think oboe is closest to a female soprano.

I agree with Erik.

As for oboe, I don't think it sounds like human voice, maybe it sounds more like someone who really speaks from the nose

Clarinet hum...maybe. I'd say it's the woodwind that sounds like human voice the most...But I think brass instruments are more like voice, and then inside the brass family...Definately trombone. It's more open than a horn, lower and more mellow than a trumpet, higher and less big than a tuba, and it projects more than a baritone/euphonium.

So trombone is God's instrument, the english horn is the angels' instrument and all the others are just plain mortal instrument. That should satisfy both trombonists and oboe players who double on english horn

It was a joke, but I was saying that because the name ''english horn'' is a mistake and the real name of the instrument should probably be ''angelic horn''. That instrument is neither a horn nor it is english. The instrument is from germany. They called it the angelic horn because, along with its cousin the oboe da caccia, it looked like horns played by angels on old german religious icons. Its name comes from medieval german, and their word meaning ''english'' and their word meaning ''angelic'' were almost indentical (I think it was something like ''engellisch'' or ''englisches''). There was a slight deformation, and a mistake was made when translating the name. This, however, has never been proved, but there is no proven origin for the name ''english horn'' anyway, and this is one of the most plausible explanations for that weird appellation.

That's why I said the english horn is the angel's isntrument. And we already said that God's voice is trombone, so there you go...sorry for you guys who play clarinet

I'm sorry, I'm not sure exactly whose voice you're comparing it to, but the clarinet sounds nothing at all like a human voice. Especially a "singing" human voice, which is what the discussion is.

Really, I can't think of another instrument outside of trombone that can do ANY of the things that a vocalist can do.
