I am 1st chair trombone in my high school freshman band, and i'm going to a bigger mouthpiece for the first time. I went from a Jupiter 12c to a Schilke 53 mouthpiece because my band director told me it would give a broader, darker tone. The mouthpiece is very comfortable but my range is gone and i feel as if i'm using tons of air compared to before. I need to be back to normal as soon as possible because i play in the jazz and concert band. My question is what exercises can i do to get my range back quickly and be able to play like before i switched?

I recommend using the 12c for jazz. Simply put, your range will always be harder achieved on a bigger MP and they'll always take more air. You might get back to "normal", but that just means that you've improved. If you start to feel normal on the 53, try the 12c again and I guaranteecit'll still feel easier to pop out high notes on. Your low range however should've improved with a bigger MP...

To be clear, there's nothing at all wrong with using more than one MP. Heck, I have 3 trombones that I get regular use out of just because I play different things (I have 6 in total just because I'm kinda a collector).

Just sit there and try to play the high chromatics.
