The positions are really pretty easy. First position is with the slide all the way in, second is with about two centimeters of inner slide showing, third is with the crossbar on the outer slide even with the bell, fourth is about five centimeters past that, fith is about five centimeters past that, sixth is about seven centimeters past that, and seventh is with about three centimeters of the sleeve exposed. Glad to be of help to a fellow trombone player.

1ST POSITION THERE IS LOW B MIDDLE F AND HIGH B AND ON. 2ND REALLY ALL YOU NEED IS A LOW A THERE.YOU SHOULD KNOW THE POSITIONS BECAUSE OF THE OTHERS WHO CANT TYPE. THIRD THEIR IS LOW A FLAT G SHARP. E IS MEDIUM AND CAN BE 2 OR 3. I AM TIRED OF TYPING BUT FOR $5 YOU CAN GO TO A MUSIC SHOP AND GET ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS 2000 IT COMES WITH A PLAY ALONG CD TO TEACH YOU TO PLAY THE GUY WHO PLAYS THE PIANO PLAYS FAST FOR BEGINNERS SO DONT TRY TO KEEP UP JUST USE HIM TO GET PROPER TONE. OR YOU CAN PLAY OVER AND OVER WITH HIM.

Try a search engine for "trombone fingering charts" and a bunch of them should pop up. I suggest getting a book to start with. Go to a music store and tell them you are just starting and need a beginning book and they might even have suggestions for a lesson teacher. A teacher will really help, even if it is just a friend that plays t-bone. good luck with the bone! stick with it cuz it rox!

1st position= all the way shut
2nd position= about 2 inches out
3rd position=even with the bell
4th position=about 1 inch farther
5th position=about another two inches out
6th position=as far out as you can comfortably go
7th position= needs practice. Take the slide brace with the tips of your fingers and go as far out as possible while still keeping your mouth on the mouthpiece.
My friend Jeff has short hands and he can only go to 5th-and-a-half position for his C.

Bb scale: Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G, A, Bb
1, 6, 4, 3, 1, 4, 2, 1
(low) (high)

Ab scale: Ab, Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab
3, 1, 6, 4, 3, 1, 4, 3
(low)
...Sorry this is so long... ^_^;

Of all the instruments out there what made you choose the trombone? Also the essential elements book really isnt that good so i would go for a different one.

Maxwell, bro not all of the positions for notes are the same. Take high F above the staff. That notes is all ways gonna be sharp, so you should pull out maybe a centimeter.

to the person that wrote the Bb and Eb scales, can you hit the high Bb? I`m going into the 8th grade this year and I`ve been playing for a year now and the highest I can hit comfortably is F. I used to be able to hit Bb when I played, like, actively, and was just joking around but now I can`t hit it. Should I just keep practicing or something? (prob. u guys are like duh)
