I just bought a brand new violin, and I;m new to playing. But a friends of mine is an accomplish violinist. She cant even get my bow to pick up my strings. I can play the E string and thats it. It is really annoying me. So all I do now is pluck my scales. Im not sure what i can do.

What do you mean by "won`t pick up"?
Anyway, it sounds as if you`ve just not got enough rosin on the bow. New bows need a VAST amount of rosin.

I get what you mean, because mine did the same exact thing when I first bought it. You need to get a LOT of rosin on your bow for the first time, and keep trying at the strings until you finally get some nice sound out of it. It must`ve taken me about 45 stupid minutes just to get a fairly clear sound at first, but I got it!
Also, make sure your bow is actually picking up the rosin. You could do this by scratching a key on it a few times to get a bit of dust going, and a nice amount of friction going for the bow to pick it up. Don`t overdo the scratching though, you don`t want it to chip off anytime soon!
Hope this helps!
