I've been playing for about 15 months. I still cannot vibrato, even though I have tried, and I have used the tips in this forum too. Does it just happen, the light comes on? I am in Maia Bang, starting book 2. OK so I am older, but I feel like a dummy. Any help would be appreciated.
Scroll down the page until you reach the 'Vibrato' topic. There are many different exercises to try. This site is an excellent resource for students. Keep trying and don't get discouraged...it will come.
Vibrato usually comes naturally. I didn't learn proper vibrato till about a year ago, and I had been playing for six years since 5th grade (now it's seven). But since you've only been playing for 15 months, don't expect it to come so quickly. Just keep practicing it and you'll get it soon enough.
I learned to do the vibrato well after about 10 months or less of playing [because I advanced very, very quickly.] It all depends on the person. Once you get used to doing it, I would expect it just comes naturally. Just keep on practicing it continually and eventually it should work out.
yeah. i learned after about a year and a half of playing. you just have to ask your teacher for tips, or go to the mentioned site above. or any other site, for that matter.
I usually encourage my students to experiment on vibrato after:
1. They can play in tune in at least two positions.
2. Their finger knuckles and WRIST are strong enough to push down the strings WITHOUT TENSSION and still stay flexible.
You can try to study playing a single note with the first finger, first position (let's say an A on the IV string), then try to lift the thumb from the neck. I know, it will be very difficult because you'll have to learn to keep the violin with your own head and shoulder, but once you are able to do so, try keeping playing that note that way, then try to move the left wrist a little bit by turning it a little on the left then on the right always by keeping the first finger on the string. After a while you'll feel that movement enough natural. Then try to put the thumb back at its right position, then try to make vibrato by applying the same movement. Keep the movement SLOW. Start doing vibrato slowly, then rise it. It should work pretty good or, at least, give you the correct sensation to start working on.
