I've been playing for 10 and you wouldn't think it! Does anyone have any tips on writing their own stuff? My boyfriend writes his own songs on the acoustic guitar and asked me to play but I can't write music when he just gives me the chords. Sitting down with a piece of written music is fine, but I don't have a clue when it comes to composing!
lol lilred, I have been playing for nearly eleven, and you probably wouldn't know it unless I told you I am glad to read that somebody else feels the same as I do!
It's a pity that harmonics, scales and improvisation often is not part of violin lessons. I learned improvisation autodidactically playing along to my favourite records when I was about 16. At that time I was playing violin for 6 years.
For a first aproach it's easy to play "modal" - one scale that fits f.e. 3 chords. Write down the chord notes and you may have a scale.
F.e. D-minor (d,f,a), G-minor (g,bb,d), A-major (a,c#,e): the scale is D harmonic minor: d,e,f,g,a,bb,c#,d or A phrygian major: a,bb,c#,d,e,f,g,a
I get really frustrated when i play in group but can't be heard above the other instruments. It's a shame the violin is quiet compared to other instruments.
What kind of music do you play in a band? If it is mainly acoustic without drums I would recomment a clip-on microphone. If you play any kind of rock music with drums, electric guitar & bass you should think about installing a pickup on your violin. There are piezo systems (Barbera, Ashworth, Headway, Schatten, Baggs, Barcus-Berry) which all mute a classical instrument slightly, because the piezo is imbedded in the bridge and electromagnetic systems (Bowtronics, Rebo), which don't touch vibrating parts of the instrument.
