Hi all,
I am a new violin student and I recently noticed that the bottom of my index finger touches the fingerboard while fingering notes. It's as though the index finger supports my other fingers because it was impossible to play when I tried not doing it. Any ideas?

Hey. I don't quite get what you mean, but I think I can help. Try relaxing your left wrist. Sit up straight and make sure your violin is the right size. Hope this helps.

Thanx for the tip stringcrazy, but I've already done that. I'm sorry I can't be more specific about what's going on, it looks like the part of the finger that connects to the hand is always touching the fingerboard. Dunno, maybe you're right, my arm needs to relax more. Thanks!

I'm not sure just what you mean either but the side of your index finger -will- touch the side of the fingerboard... this is fine. Make sure that your left wrist is not up against the fingerboard and unless you're having intonation problems or you're uncomfortable you're probably fine. The best start is with a teacher... but if you can't do that there are many places on the web where suggested "proper" playing positions are discussed and pictures. Happy fiddling!

Thank you so much. I do have a teacher who told me that it's normal for this part of the finger to touch the fingerboard...I just wanted a second opinion as well. No intonation problems so far and everything feels comfortable.

Hi, i also think that it is normal. I am also a new student, and that is what i intentionally do so that i can practice my fingers in the fingerboard. my teacher says i should do it so that my fingers will get used in the positioning in the fingerboard. I think you will be able to let go of that habit someday as you go along with difficult and harder pieces. I dont know if this is what you mean by your post but i hope my input helps. God bless on you Lessons.

That's exactly what my teacher also said. He said it's inevitable until my fingers get used to where the notes on the fingerboard are. Good luck with your lessons too!!
