ok, so i'm a big fan of the violin and i've always wanted to play it, so i said "why not now?" well, maybe b/c i can't read music and i don't play any other instrument and i'm almost 20. the reason i put my age in there is just b/c i've heard it's harder to start when you're older. is this true?

i guess what i'm trying to ask is how hard (and how long) is going to be for me to decently play the violin? i'm looking to be able to do the type of stuff in yellowcard, and preferably arcade fire. just looking for some information, hopefully inspirational, so anything you have to say will help!!

i'm like you, i dont have any background in music at all. I am 23 when i started to study. i;ve been studying for 10 months straigth already.it is hard but i really want to learn even if it will take me years. i dont want to regret not to have tried. so i suggest that you really try it.

i dont know how many months or years it will take. as for me i have alot of studying and practice to do but im really determined to learn. you can also do it.

Go for it! It's great that you want to learn violin/fiddle! No matter what style you want to play... it's best to get some lessons at first. That way you'll get started with a position that will help you play in tune, develop a flexible bow arm.. .and that will be comfortable for you while playing. If you have CDs that you want to be able to play along with to get started... you may want to get a "slow-downer" program of some sort. There are many. Best wishes and happy fiddling to you!

And... no, it's not necessarily harder as an adult. You just have to remind yourself that even though you intellectually know what your hands and arms should do and how they should work together to create a nice sound, play quickly, etc.... it will take awhile to physically make it happen. Be patient with yourself.
