Hi,
I just bought my first violin, and I was trying to apply rosin so I could start practicing, but I can't get enough rosin on the bow! I've been working at it for an hour and a half. I scratched up the surface of the block and tried applying it that way, then I tried scraping it off and applying the dust directly. But the bow just slides off the strings still!
I've read directions, and the bow is tight enough, but not too tight ( I don't think), and there's no visible dust on the bow, or between the strings.
Any ideas? Please help.

keep at it and it will come, always with a new violin, it takes loads because none has ever touched it before.
Don't worry just keep on doing it for a little while.

Yeah keep applying it, scratch your rosin with a sandpaper and then apply it to the bow. Be patient, as when i got mine for the first time, I was like applying rosin for thirty minutes already. Just keep it up.

How are you applying the rosin? I found that applying it in short fast strokes starting at the frog and then gradually working your way to the tip works faster than swiping the rosin all the way up and down the bow.
You will know when you have enough when you go to play the violin and the bow "sticks" to the strings. If you play it and an enormous cloud of rosin dust suddenly appears in your face, then you have too much. Just wipe off the extra rosin with an old shirt and you are good to go!
