i am a violinist that has been playing for 3 years and i am about to go to a 5A high school meaning all the pieces are going to be way harder than grade 2 or 3 musici have a private lesson teacher but we are always getting to gether to practice solo and ensemble or some audition so i feel silly asking this but yeah i can shift to third position but between out of tune notes and me being uncomfortable (playing wise)what should i do to get more comfortable with the higher positions

I used to feel the same way. I got a book with lots of scales and shifting exercises in it. Try "Essential Elements" books and get a technique book. Practice at home, muchly.

Good luck.

I have that one. It's no good for position work. This book is called "Advanced Technique for strings" It is also put out by Essential Elements. ^_^

It's a really good book. You should check it out. =D

Oscar Sevcik's book on shifting is great. And so are the Introducing The Position books.
About intonation...try practicing a lot of scales [slowly ]and arpeggios and everything [Carl Flesch's system]. And don't let yourself play one note out of tune. Anyway, happy praticing!

I'm learning in suzuki- but it just has lots of peices to play in. I just learned third position a few months ago- I started playing "Eleanor Rigby" for my 3rd level concert strings orchestra and shifted the high note over and over again, and then did other peices with more shifting until I could do it quickly- I'm still working on general intonation alot, and it is a lot more fun doing scales with shifts. give it time.
