Hey everyone. I just started playing the violin after being inspired by Grappelli and also Heifetz. Im really into the gypsy jazz though and ultimately want to be playing that more so than classical. I have a teacher and have been with him for a few months now and all is well but I am a real do it yourselfer. Although I will continue my lessons I was wondering what any of you would practice if you wanted to play things like hot club tunes, etc. Any books or tips you can provide? I really want to swing....eventually haha. Im really determined but I want to practice the right things that will help me reach my goal as soon as possible.

I would strongly recommend that you stay with your teacher even if you are a person that prefers to do things on their own.

If you want to pursue jazz than i suggest you practice some scales and arpeggios. Jazz is all about improv and you can improve that by learning scales. as boring as they may be, this is the best way to improve your jazz technique. look for etude books and scale books to get started on.
