the fine tuner SHOULD be on your e string. e strings are not meant for everyday tuning without one. make sure this is the string the fine tuner is on!!
To tune: use the pegs! twisting the peg away from you makes the string tighter and therefore a higher note
twisting the peg towards you makes the string looser and therefore a lower note. when tuning it is better and easier to lower the note (bring the peg towards you, until it is below desired pitch) and then work your way back up. Get the string tuned as close as you can. If it is not perfectly in tune, yo can gently pull the string away (side to side away) from the violin SLIGHTLY to flatten the note and you can pinch the string at the very top of the fingerboard/ base of the peg box to sharpen the note.
