OK. So my sister's wedding is coming (this August) and I thought maybe I should play her a piece at the reception, as one of the gifts. The only problem is, a lot of people do not appreciate the violin enough, they always associate the violin and its music with BOREDOM, SLOW, SLEEP etc - you get the point.

Anyway, because of this I want to prove to the many people who think this, that the violin can be just as lively and interesting as the other intruments. Does anyone have any suggestions for pieces suitable for a wedding reception?

I personally like the song Canon in D. It was played at my parents wedding and i just love the song and the violin music for it on 8notes is easy...I taught myself most of the song though with only a little help on 8notes!!

Boccherini has some interesting pieces (can't think of any names at the moment) and you could spice canon in d up a little, if your good at that sort of thing. it is played best with at least two violins though, and even better with a full quartet. Mozart is always good. Can you buy cheap classical cds from a (don't quite now how to explain it) place like target or sears? or whatever the equivalent is where you are? try listening to them, you might get an idea.

just coast around sites that you can listen to music on

Thanks you guys for the reply.

Well, yes it is a surprise for my sister so i don't want to ask for her opinion on certain pieces.

I personally like Pachelbel's Canon in D as well but I think its more suitable for the Church (which I wont be playing at) because I will be playing at the reception.

I will listen to some of Boccherini, but was also thinking of maybe a tango? Does anyone have any further suggestions for tango pieces other than Libertango?

Thanks heaps.

Does anyone have any other specific suggestions for tangos other than Piazzolla's 'Libertango'?

oh wow Jalousie! i love that piece. Yes there will be a live band but no other strings, just keyboard, drums, guitar etc.
Do you think it will work?

If you like Canon, Hal Leonard publishes a Classical music book with play-along cd and vol.3 has that as well as Bach's Concerto No.1 in A Minor (first movement), Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (first movement), Flight of the Bumblebee, Hungarian Dance No. 5, Meditation by Massenet, Beethoven's Romance in F, and Vivaldi's Spring, the first movement.
What is their wedding song? Maybe you should consider that one or the father/daughter dance song (something like I Loved her First, My Little Girl, Sunrise/Sunset). You can find those in play-along cd format.
