My sons would like me to teach them violin. How do I figure out what size instrument to get them? One is 14 and the other is 9.

Take them to a music store and place the violin on their shoulder as they would hold it when they are playing, and get them to extend their arm out so that it touches the scroll. if the bands of their wrist/base of the fleshy part of the thumb touches the bottom of the scroll its the right size, though at a guess your 14 year old would be a 4/4 and your 9 year old may be a 1/2 or a 3/4 depending on his height.
