Bridge keeps slipping out from under my strings?    01:03 on Sunday, February 15, 2009 Vote for this post Vote against this post 0 votes

I recently broke my E-string and I bought a new one and now my bridge keeps slipping out from under my strings when I try to tune it. I can't get it to stay up. Does anyone know what I can do about it?

It might be that you have a raw bridge. Or the bridge is to high for the strings to hold. if you're not careful an even greater problem would occur, the soundpost might tilt inside your violin. and that's even greater trouble. if you have the time, go to a luthier and have your bridge fixed. Usually, a raw bridge must be cut according to the parallel height of the strings from the heel to the end of the fingerboard. then, you place sand paper where the bridge should be placed and then you brush the legs of the bridge on to the sand paper, so the legs are accustomed to the base's form and firmly placed. then, the holes of the bridge is abit widened for quality sound (most luthiers don't do this step but its very much ok if you don't or have it done to your bridge)then you put the a string first then the d string then the g string and the e string comes last. By the way, don't do this on your own, go to a professional luthier. =)

Its the same bridge I had before. My E-string broke and I bought a new one, now whenever I try to tune the bridge slips out from under my strings. I will probably take it to the luthier anyway and get a new bridge done though (when I get the scratches fixed)...

If you haven't taken it to the shop yet, when you tune the strings keep a close eye on the bridge and adjust it while tuning. Look at the feet of the bridge to see if its tilted and if so move it to the proper position. If you're not confident in doing that yourself then take it to the shop so they can look at it.

The bridge has a habit of moving when you put on new strings, especially when you change more than one.

Ok, thats probably the problem. This is the first time Ive had to change strings on this particular violin so I don't know its habits with new strings yet. Ive re-set bridges before so thats not a problem its just it wants to slip everytime I try to tighten my E-string.

It is just natural for a bridge to tilt forward when you are replacing your strings or tuning. All you have to do is keep a close eye on your bridge, when it looks like it has tilted forward, try to pull it back and have it standing up straight again, don't be afraid of your strings popping. Strings popping is just natural, go buy a new one, if it keeps on popping, the problem maybe that your bridge is too high for your violin.

I would have a new bridge fit. It seems your experienced with tuning and bridge tilt. Could be the angle on the feet is not correct.
