I'm kind of confused on which string to play! For example when do you know to play an A note with my first finger on the G string as opposed to playing an open A string?

I think what you are talking about is octaves. On all instruments, the sheet music only uses the letters A-G, and then repeats them. If you aren't familiar with reading music, then you will need to pick up some book that will explain it. I agree with the person above that Essential Elements is a good one. The A on the G String is an octave lower than Open A, and so would be printed differently on the sheet music.

Are you reading sheet music? If so, the A that is below the staff (five lines) is the one on the G string. The one on the second space up is open A, and the one above the staff is the 3rd finger on the E string.

If you are reading notes, look up the song online and listen to it, then match the sounds.

The guitar looks Kinda good, but the violin (that is the one that I play) is pretty good too, but really harder. The Cello is a good opcion too. I dont know anything about guitar or Cello, but it depend about how are you and who. The violin is a hard to learn, but the guitar is easy (thats what people tell me and my brothe play it, and he told me that is not too hard) It just depend of how are you. May you prefer the guitar, but may you are pacient and elegant and you choose the violin. Just the two are cool, believe me. Play violin is fun and pplay guitar looks kinda fun too!
