I have a Stainer copy - "STAINER." is written on the back.

The label inside reads "Fried. Aug. Glass verfertigt nach Jacobus Stainer in Absam prope Oenipontum 1662 ("62" is hand written.)

Worth anything?

My Dad (who`s 88) has an old 3/4 violin which is stamped on the back below the neck with Stainer. It also has the following printed (not handwritten) label inside:
Jacobus Stainer in Absam
prope Oeniponium 1665

Can anyone tell me if this violin is worth anything today? Please email response? Thanks!

The number 158 and the name Vincenzo Pisane are handwritten. I presume that this copy was commissioned by Mr. Pisane sometime between 1900 and 1909, but since there`s no number after the 190__ we don`t know exactly when. This violin also has 2 very nice mother of pearl inlaid bows.

Does anyone know if this violin is worth anything today? Please reply via email - thanks.

Have great grandfather`s (immigrated from Finland)old violin in a black case with label inside that says "stratavarious 1736". Any info would be great.

The chances of it being a real one is very low. I was just reading about it. They said that there has been many fakes.Sorry

I have a violin that is at least 100 years old that has a labbel written in pencil in it that says Jacobus Stainer 2417. Is it worth any thing.

i wrote a post in december but nobody seemed to have any info for me so i am trying one more time...my grandfather`s (from hungary) violin - it is marked inside with a handwritten label:

absam 1659
my grandfather is 90 and his grandparents sent him this violin from hungary when he was about 6 or 7...they were in their 80`s at the time.
i was just wondering if anyone knew where i could look to figure out where this violin came from - person who made it, where it was made, that kind of thing,. it means a lot to my grandpa.

Labels inside the violins, for all intents and purposes, mean very little.

Someone knowledgable has to LOOK at the instrument. The label may help to verify the authenticity of a particular, but that`s about it.

If you want or need to know about any particular instrument, it needs to be taken to a luthier or another strings expert who does appraisals.

How can anyone possibly give advice without seeing the object?

hi, my husband has an old violin that the inside label reads jacobus stainer in abfam pone oenipontum 1689. it`s not in the best condition. the strings are broken and the piece where the strings are connected is completely off, but can be restored. does anybody know of an appraiser that can look at in in fort lauderdale?

I have a violin handed down to me by my Grandfather in 1958. He told me it belonged to his Grandfather, (my Gt. Gt. G`father. born 1828. Wiltshire, England) It has the label inside. The Stainer Manufactoring Co,Charing Cross Mansion, St. Martins lane, Charing cross London. I played it for 3 years, in the Melbourne High Sch. orchestra,(1958-1960) but have not played it since. When my Hungarian teacher played it, it sounded fantastic, and he told me it was a beautiful instrument. I`ve had it restored a couple of times, the last time 18 years ago, when I was told it would be worth well over $1000.00 Australian
