Hi, I am determined to learn to play the violin, and by teaching myself as i can`t afford lessons, are there any books or sites at all that can help me? Any advice at all that anyone has for beguinners would also be of great help to me!
Thank you!

Hi Lucy,

Unfortunately no book, website or even video will be able to give you the feedback you need, especially in the early stages. People do learn to play violin without teachers, but they risk developing bad habits that are very hard to unlearn later on.

If you can`t pay a teacher, do you have any friends who play who could help you? Getting the basic bowing & fingering sorted out is something most players could at least help you with - and maybe you could pay for their help through doing chores, babysitting, or something like that?

Just a quick note - there are also certain teachers, such as advanced students, or those just beginning a business that often won`t charge as much as an established teacher. They are quite capable of teaching the basics. You also don`t need to go for weekly lessons. We`ve done quite well with lessons every two weeks - and lots of hard practice in between.

THE BELWIN STRING BUILDER IS PERFECT FOR YOU!
This book has clear explanations, etc. But to teach yourself you need to know how how high a note is and whether to move your finger up or down slightly. To check this I STRONGLY advise you to buy an electric tuner. Have fun!
