Sorry but as an add on to my last question: there seems to be so many varieties of rosin available - what should one be looking for and which should one avoid? thanks again.

Apparently the circular cakes are better to use than the rectangular boxes because as you wear down the ones in the rectangular pieces of wood it forms a groobe which makes the rosin application uneven.

I think the rule of thumb was dark rosin if you live in a moderately ish dry climate (I live in kansas and i was told dark is the way to go, i did some research but i forgot) and light rosin is better for wetter climates because of the humidity. I`d check on this though.

Look through Sharmusic.com and swstrings.com they have a lotta different stuff. I dont think theres really any big ones to stay away from. Some are made for certain strings, like Pirastro`s Olive rosin for their Oliv strings, but in general i think about anything will work.
