I am currently on a professional loan of a violin by John Friedrich c.1900. It is about $15,000-20,000 instrument. He is a fairly famous maker. Lived in New York at the turn of the century.

Rebecca ....

It is not a Maggini.

Sorry. Magginis are even rarer than Strads 9though not as expensive. No-one, but no-one, would sell a maggini on ebay. What you have is a Maggini COPY.

Really? Who certified it? And did he do so for you, or did the seller just give you a certificate?

Have you got the ebay number still? I bet we`d all like to see it!

Who certified it, what does the certificate actually say, and what was the ebay numhber?

How much did you get it for and how much is it worth? I hope you have it adequately insured!

Nothing wrong with playing a good copy!

Frankly, I don`t know if I`d want to be playing a very expensive violin, esp. given my level of playing. I`d always be worried about breaking it or something happening to it...

...if I hit the lottery and actually found one...I think I`d sell it...maybe consider early retirement...

The pictures would be interesting (is there a way of posting them here for everyone?) but I`m even more interested in the description. What was the ID of the seller?

You know, I have been trying to find his eBay ID for quite a while, it was about a year ago so i dont remember. He was not a violin person, he was selling antiques and junk like old dishes and tools and stuff. heres the story...
I was origanily just looking for a restoring project on ebay, something realy old andfalling apart and thats exactly what this looked like from the pictures, When it arrived it was in pretty good shape (the case wasent hehe) and was already playable. Just need a little tuning. I looked all over it and could only fing the Maggini lable in the f-hole and I just had this feeling like I should get a appraised so I asked this guy in NY to appraise it for me and it turned out that it was real!
description:
It`s a light golden-brown color with medium/wide grained spruce top and deeply flamed ribs, neck, scroll and two-part back. The scroll is deeply and beautifully cut with an elegant extra turn. There is double inlayed purfling w/ bee stings. It has a crack on the back that has been beautifully repaired. The sound is very deep, dark and very powerfull w/ dramatic lower notes and singing, clear high notes.
oh! almost forgot, it is a little wider and fatter than regular violins, this gives it it`s deep dramatic tone. The f-holes a cut perfectly, long and curvy.
If anyone wants pictures of it, you may have to IM me on AIM if you have it, I tried to email some to someone they said that the pictures didnt show up. I will be putting up a website soon, getting ready to start that and the pictures will be on there.
Thanks
Rebecca
