Does anyone know if there is a difference in sound between a violin or viola constructed with bird's eye maple or tiger maple? There seems to be a difference in price so I was wondering if one was better than the other.
I think maple is better (and it's the most expensive too) than bird's eye. Bird's eye is less stable, those small knots may get loose with time.
Italian "Pioppo" (poplar) is very good too, as well as "Salice" (which name in English I don't remember) are very good too, due to their acoustic properties, but are much less used than maple.
But the work of a good maker will prevail over the wood he uses.
Thank you for the reply. I was wondering if anyone else reads this forum! That is a good point about the knots in the bird's eye maple. Thanks you again for your input.
