I need to find a new fingerboard for my viola because my current one isnt ebony wood and is warped. So the guys at the music shop dont want to sand it down because it is just painted black, and it would be lookin all wierd and discolered. So I need to know about how much a new fingerboard would cost if any of you know, or if you know where I can look for one, that would help too.

Hi! A new ebony board (first class) will cost about 30 bucks BUT someone will have to make it thinner with a plane, scoop the underside, make a gentle concavity on its top, and cut it to the proper size, and that will cost much more.

Unless you are a quite skilled woodworer (planing ebony is not an easy task) it will be impossible to you to do the job properly. Eventually, you can ruin the fingerboard and your viola may suffer too.

I advise you to have it made by a professional.

thank you, i will. Do you know about how much it will cost to get it done by a professional? I can just find out when I go to get it fixed, but if you know that would be good too.

It's difficult to say how much will it cost... it will depend on the city the luthier lives, his fame, etc. The work will envolve also changing the upper nut.

What's the problem with your current fingerboard?

You can see pics of one of the 17 inches violas I've made here:

well the fingerboard is warped, so that up next to where the fingerboard ends the string almost touches, and it gets worse because of the offset arch of the bridge, so that on the a string if you shift up beyond 2nd, maybe 1st position the string touches the fingerboard and squeaks because its like playing a note as far up on the fingerboard you can go. it could be easily fixed by sanding it down, but since its not ebony wood the guys at the store said it would ruin it because it'd be off colored. Not that I mind that much but it'd look a little wierd during a concert. Maybe tehy dont want to repaint it black after sanding it down cause it would drip onto the varnish?

Hi! I'm (still) selling them for 7K. They are 17 inches, based on Andrea Guarneri 1676, known as "Conte Vitale". The string length is 375, it's quite a confortable instrument to play. You can e.mail me:

Ciao
