I just recently bought and started playing the viola. When I bought it, the clerk advised me to get a smaller viola, but since they didn't have one, I got a 16". I bought that in the US. So when I came back to Mexico to take lessons, I was doing ok, but pretty soon started to hurt (not my fingers). I cannot even stand up straight while playing the viola (and I don't have a problem with slouching).

My teacher advised me to acquire a viola that was 2in shorter (14in). I know that I have to get a smaller one, but I really want to know what the pros and cons are in doing this. Any advice? Also where would you advise to get one online?

Thank you so very much :]

If your teacher has advised you to get one 2 inches smaller then do it. Yes you will lose tone. Better that than constant armache and backache. How tall are you?

As for what to buy and where, how much are you looking to spend?
