I have been playing the violin for three years now. I have always wanted to play the cello as well but some musicians tell me that i should only focus on one instrument, otherwise, my bowing techniques would get mixed up.Someone please tell me!Is this true? What should I do?I really would like to play both instruments
I really do encourage you to learn both instruments. I have played the violin since I was 9. After seven years, I decided to pick up the cello as well. If you have a good grasp on bowing for the violin, let me assure you, you will not mix up the techniques. If you are not sure if you are not sure if you are bowing properly, I do recommend you take a few lessons, formal or not.
As a side note, learning the cello helped me with my violin playing, especially in the areas of intonation and vibrato. It is like learning a foreign language: you will actually learn more about your own language (i.e. violin) in the course of learning the foreign language (the cello).
If you decided to learn the cello, I wish you the best of luck.
Well... it's been over a month since your original post... so I'm interestedin what you decided...? Hope you're giving the cello a try! It's such a beautiful instrument. Also... I hope you'll give a try to playing some fiddle tunes on both your violin and the cello. I play fiddle most of the time now.... very little classical viola anymore. However... we have a friend who plays beautiful cello... and can really kick into the fiddle tunes. It's definitely fun!

I can't see why you can't learn both of them. I play the cello, but I play the piano, the guitar and the oboe as well, and it has only helped me to play more than one instrument. Playing the violin will also make it easier for you to learn how to play the cello. Good luck
