Hello everyone,
I play cello for 10 years and I'm facing this problem for the first time:
My teacher told me to study the LALO Concerto in D minor which I did. Then 2 weeks later he told me to study exercise 14 from Grutzmacher Opus 38 Vol2.When I started studying I realized that I can't play anything from this excercise. I don't know what to do cause I has been 1 month and I can't play it. Certainly it is psychological but I don't know how to begin learning it.
Please can you advise me what to do?

P.S.LALO is beautiful!!

is it so hard that you simply stare at it, and can't figure out which bit is the easiest? or dont u know how it goes, or what the melody is like?

happened to me many times, but i always find that listening to a recording helps to get the mood of the song in your head. and finding the key features of the song (eg. shifting, spiccato, thumb position) and practising excercises that focus on those techniques also makes everything much easier!

Well, I thing that i could learn it without listening to the melody. Actually I don't have a cd with crutzmacher exercises and when I asked my teacher to play it to me he refused....I tried some methods myself, I played every note separately, very slow, I repeated many times the position changes e.t.c. and the result is that now I can play only the first line but not with the bows that are written in the book.Learning the rest seems like it will take...forever...And its true that when I open the book i have the feeling thats it is very diffucult to play and there is no reason to search for which part is easier...

well i suppose u can always try finding another excerise/piece with the same sort of style and techniques, but slightly easier. if it's too hard, there's no point struggling with it for ever, because that just takes time. and if ur teacher refuses to play it, well that just proves it's hard even at professional level.
