Can someone tell me if student strings are any harder or simpler to play as aposed to pro level strings? I am kinda poor so I have always just gotten cheap strings and never tried any good strings but I find it hard to actavate strings sometimes.

Oh, come on now, out of all the cello players here, no one has an answer...or are you all shy?

I only have some experience with violin strings and there at least it seems to be the other way round, the more expensive synthetic core strings being far easier to play than the cheap steel strings. Don't know about cello strings, having practiced the cello only for a couple of months now. I also have some difficulty to get the C and sometimes G strings "started" properly, sometimes I get a nasty "falsetto" squeak. I'm thinking about replacing the C and possibly G strings with ones of better quality, my cello is a very cheap chinese one and so the strings probably aren't that great. The D and A strings are okay so far, but the lower strings definitely could respond and sound better. This could of course be due to poor bow technique, but I noticed similar problems with the original steel strings on my two chinese violins(an electric and an acoustic) which was much improved by replacing the original strings with Dominants. So if someone could recommend a good C string with a faster responce for me too?

Sounds like you are having the same problems as me with C and G. I am thinking of sinthetic core strings but they will have to be steel wraped or my pickups won't pick them up. I wonder if just a better set of student strings would work better. I would imagine my strings where made in china as well. Great for getting a cheap start but very hard to work with.

cheap strings suck, and i can't stand them. but its the same with driving, if you don't know how to drive, a cheap car and a million ferarri is all the same to you. but your C's and G's will be a pain for the rest of your life, even on good strings. good strings DO help, but you have to learn how to play those strings. but avoid chinese strings at ALL costs! i'm not being racist, but they are terribly bad.

Sounds about right! Of course geting good strings aren't going to maky you play any better but when your only problem is string activation, then maybe it is your strings!
